What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is based on ancient traditional East Asian bodywork technique that involves gently scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool—usually made of jade, rose quartz, or metal. This technique helps move stagnant areas of the body that experience symptoms due to deep seeded bound tissue that usually cause pain and tenderness, restricted mobility, tension in muscles, and inflammation and swelling throughout the body. Gua Sha massage improves blood and lymphatic circulation and breaks down tension or adhesions in the fascia that surrounds and lines tissues and organs in the body.

What to expect from a Gua Sha massage:

Gua Sha can be performed as a full-body massage or used as a targeted treatment to specific regions in need. Your therapist will apply oil or balm to the area being treated to allow the tool to glide smoothly.

Facial and Full Body Gua Sha are designed to be gentle using rhythmic strokes. Your provider will ‘scrape’ along the skin to move stagnant lymphatic fluids that cause puffiness, bloating, stress lines and tension. By performing Gua Sha your provider stimulates microcirculation bringing oxygen to the skin potentially boosting collagen production and promoting firmer more lifted appearance over time.

Targeted body Gua Sha is used to therapeutically treat specific areas of the body that are tense, inflamed or chronically affected. By doing a slightly deeper stroke with rigorous repetition, temporary redness or mild bruising—known as "sha"—may form as stagnation is released from the tissues promoting improved mobility, decreased tension and pain. Sessions are customized to your sensitivity and goals. Gua Sha is not painful!

Gua Sha is often used to treat:

  1. Headaches or migraines
  2. Chronic muscle tightness
  3. Sinus congestion
  4. Poor circulation or lymph stagnation
  5. Fatigue and low energy
  6. Muscular tension, soreness and pain
  7. Scar tissue or fascial restrictions
  8. Facial puffiness or dull skin
  9. Detoxification and immune support
  10. It’s also commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for releasing “wind” or stagnation contributing to pain or illness.

Do Gua Sha Massages Hurt?

Gua Sha should not be painful. While it may feel intense in tight or stagnant areas, the pressure is always adjustable. The goal is to stimulate, not bruise—though redness or mild markings may appear and typically fade within a few days.

Facial and Total Body Gua Sha are both extremely gentle and calming. Communicate with your therapist if anything feels too intense or uncomfortable.

Gua Sha Massage Techniques May Include:

Targeted Treatment: Tool assisted scraping of the skin over problemed areas to release tension. Improve circulation, decrease pain and improve mobility.

Facial Gua Sha: Gentle, gliding movements over the face and jawline to promote lymph drainage and improve skin tone.

Trigger Point Release: Scraping over tight knots or fascial adhesions to reduce discomfort and restore mobility.

Lymphatic Drainage Support: Light strokes that guide excess fluid toward drainage points.

Traditional Techniques: May follow meridian lines or acupuncture zones depending on the therapist’s training.

Tools are thoroughly sanitized between sessions and used with appropriate oils to ensure smooth, safe application.

Side Effects and Precautions for Gua Sha May Include:

Gua Sha is generally safe, but it may not be appropriate in the following cases:

  1. Active skin infections, wounds, or rashes
  2. Severe clotting disorders or blood thinner use
  3. Recent surgery or cosmetic procedures in the area
  4. Fever or illness
  5. Extreme sensitivity or fragile skin

Redness, petechiae (small red dots), or light bruising may occur—these are normal responses that are usually resolved in a few days. Let your therapist know if you’re prone to bruising or have any medical concerns.
